The tradition says that the name of Campo del Príncipe (Prince’s Land) comes from the fact that a Christian prince died here because he felt from his horse. Another legends say that here lays an Arab prince or that King “El Zagal” ordered to bring previous King Muley Hacen’s corpse so that the people could see he was dead. In 1513 this square hosted the celebration of the “festival of jousts and cains because the city had a deep need of it”. In 1518, the celebration of the wedding of Duchess of Sesa, Gran Capitán’s daughter, took place here. During the 17th and 18th it witnessed several popular revolts, including the one in March 1648 in which the people from Granada achieved to dismiss the governor.
Thanks to its situation we can enjoy here a wonderful view of the quarters of Antequeruela and Mauror and the formerly known as “Balcony to Paradise” (“Los Mártires”). Downtown we can observe the San Cecilio church and the Militar Hospital. Today, evenings and nights are full of live thanks to the bars and pubs located nearby. One of its access streets has a two-pipes fountain. Most of its surface has the typical cobbles from Granada. In an open space we can see a beautiful stone cross with the image of Christ. This was built in 1640 by popular subscription in El Realejo Alto (the upper part of the district of El Realejo) but was moved here 42 years later. It is named “Cristo de los Favores” (Christ of the Favours) and witnesses some religious acts during the Holy Week here in Granada. On Good Friday the people from Granada come here to aks Christ for three favours.

The square has benches and areas for childs games.
