GARDENS, CARMEN DE LOS MÁRTIRES
958 22 79 53
The gardens of the Carmen de los Mártires are located in the “carmen” which shares its name from the old Campo de Ahabul (Arab name) or Corral de los Cautivos (Christian name).
In its inner structure we can mark its ornamental par-terres around and next to the building. Behind them there are some forestal areas and further away, orchard gardens. We can also admire a collection of gardens of different syles: a Barroque French garden, with a wide pool, a “à la anglaise” garden, the Garden of the Palmtrees with a three-store fountain and irregular squares of straight hedges and palmtrees. The “Spanish Garden” which formerly imitated the traditional structure of the gardens in the “cármenes”, nowadays conforms a structure which remembers the water channel in Generalife with a central pool. The Landscape Garden with lake, a pool for the watering which the surrounding plants try to hide giving it this appearance of a “lake” with two little isles for ducks and swans. The little one is decorated with hedges and has a stone “harbour” with fake medieval ruins. The large one known as “Patio Nazarí” (Nasrid Courtyard) of 1944 shows the typical features of the Nasrid gardens and the “labyrinth forest” which serves for linking the gardens.
