On Holy Saturday we have de privilege to see the importance of this week in the city. The Virgin of Las Angustias is the main character on this day as she is the patron virgin of the city. She appears sat on her silver throne reproducing the galleries of the Patios de los Leones (Courtyard of the Lions in the Alhambra). Also notable is the Lord descended from the Cross. Climbing the red hill of the Alhambra along the statues and coming down again to the city is a real tradition. This image of the Virgin reflects a profound sorrow (Angustia in Spanish language) while holding her son’s dead head.
This procesión offers a visual show full of light as people usually light sparklers at the Gate of Justice (Puerta de la Justicia). It is an unforgettable trip back to the Alhambra through the Cuesta de Gomérez. The people of Granada join forces for this last hard but satisfactory stretch.
